Sims, Linux & Media Family

I found the Open Source Household article to be quite interesting. Having only used Mac and Microsoft Windows operating systems I was unaware of the Linux operating system and that a free end operating system existed. We are so accustom to going out and buying a PC that automatically comes with Microsoft Windows, and in a way we just accept what we get without looking for other software. If the Linux operating system is so much faster and easier to use then Microsoft, why are the manufactures of computers not offering the system? Maybe it is because Mr. Bill Gates has so much control over all the PC brands.

In the Seduction of Sim article there was an emphasis on creativity and stimulation instead of shoot and kill games. Sims games require more personal commitment and challenge curiosity and fantasy. Sims at least tries to promote life skill learning and critical thinking. Unfortunately the newer Sims games have become focused on love and scoring a date rather then being educational. Sim City can clearly be used for history and geography classes. For example students can learn what happens in the future after altering their city? They can learn the city life pros and cons and they also have the fun of building their own city.

After viewing the www.mediafamily.org site, I found it to be very helpful for parents and educators of children. I came across the article “National Parental Warning” I was shocked to learn that you could actually unlock sexually graphic interactive scenes for the game Grand Theft Auto by downloading a “mod”.

Unlock Sex!!

I like that you pointed out that with simulation games the emphasis is more on the creative genre rather than the 'shoot and kill' genre. I think that things like this need to be marketed more often than 'shoot and kill' games -- it needs to be shown that these creative games are equally entertaining. I guess that's why they are coming out with all the Sim games that are about love, partying .. and wasn't there one that was about the playboy mansion? Hmmm ... appealing to our generation? If that's what you call it now.

Yah ... I heard about the GTA unlocking. I also heard that the game has now been banned ... my brother is playing it right now. There is A LOT of swearing!!

Creativity

I agree that the Sims games promote creativity rather than just point and shoot and kill! I didn't really think about the educational side of the games when I played them in grade 9 and 10. They were just so addicting. The games do provide a simulation tool for inventing, exploring, solving problems and imagination. It is opened ended play, to a certain degree.
